What they took out, edit-wise, was that[long pause] I gotta think about how to say this. I started out with tin cans actually, to see if I could develop anything, but l got bored trying to get a sound out of it so finally got a drum and started practicing on that. RM: Who were the drummers you were listening. I have four 19" crash cymbals, a 21" swish on the left and a 21" Chinese on the right, and a 22" Earth ride cymbal. I didnt! I cant tell you when, but Im gonna get it done. It was suggested that I could tour and sit on a stool. Id had some pain in my left hip area before, but I didnt think nothin about it cause it would come and go. Its like I saidI didnt crack the stone. I've been collecting material for it. And so they gave us an ultimatumyou either get a frontman, or were gonna drop you from the label. Bye," I left London and went to San Francisco to check out Journey, because they had been calling me up ever since l had been with Bowie. At this point, it seems that it will be a rock and roll album. Because they said we all sounded alike. He was Ringo's chauffeur and funny enough, he played bass. And the show was gonna air on Sunday, finally, my publisher got back to me saying well, they need to know, and I said, If theyll tell me how its used, then Ill be glad to let go of my own equal approval. So I had to swear to not tell nobody, which I did, and they told me how the show ends. I stll perspire a lot, but it's just from my body working. And Jon Cain and I used to spend hours together, doing lyrics. I had to spend some time doing something which didn't take too much mental thought-something I could just have fun with. Cant you just, yknownot do that? And, he asked me again: We wanna know when youre going to surgery. And Id always wanted to do a record with him, because I just loved his musicalityI loved the fact that he played like a wicked guitar player, and was always curious what Id sound like playing with him. The next show is sold out. And Im grateful for all of it, I wouldnt trade it for the worldbut it didnt squelch much, yknow? Okay. Did you have to go to London? Aynsley was very disappointed, but Bruce said, Aynsley, f it! And Ive played some of the stuff for friends, and for some people that arent afraid to tell me the truth. And it took a few more months, until October, and then I was ready, and found the right doctor for me. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. Okay. This is the healthiest Ive ever been, and I think its the best Ive been playin. The only thing is, it doesn't look like a drum kit. And I dont think Ill be able to come back to it if you break it. In England, at that time, American records were about four years behind. I had a lot of double kicking happening and it almost sounds like there were two bass drums being used. But before that it was ridiculous. Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? AD: A funny thing happened with that. I like to do it when I'm not on the road. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. Lets roll. I did a one-off record with Sammy Hagar. But it's hard to teach kids that. Even now, I need a teacher to drive me so I practice and advance more. I gotta go out there and try to get in this business. _[laughs] _Before its too late! Yeah. With their 1978 breakthrough album, Infinity, some rock writers even today attempt to reduce the remarkable transformation by the San Francisco band Journey as "talented, veteran, but commercially struggling group hires world-class singer, which anybody would recognize; shortens song arrangements; and instantly becomes the biggest band in America". When Im ready Im ready. And I said, I understand that. Everybody understood that. So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. I didnt do that. Theres nobody who plays like Neal Schon, to this day. On the ZappaCast, you mentioned Aynsley Dunbar and Terry Bozzio being in the audience at one show - did you meet them after? They'll tell me, "I think you should simplify it." And we ended up making two more recordswe did Look Into the Future and then Next, and each record sold progressively less than the last one, but we attained a huger live audience, because we were playing live so much. You broke out of prison, and immediately started thinking about how to get back in. So fine-I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity. And so we were basically known as a touring band. It would really slow me down." Now I wanna go home for a while., **As a singer, were you dealing with a different set of demands? But that can make you perspire too much and you can get cramps from the lack of salt. Im looking at it very simply. I wanna let go. And Im sure they thought, Oh, there he goes. Youre phenomenal. Did you get burned out? When you see a Journey song turn up on a movie soundtrack, or on TV? While I was doing that, David Bowie called and invited me to one of his gigs. But the truth is, no. I'll keep going and see if I can get anything else out of it." And that is sort of a drag. Was that frustrating for you, that he sort of pulled out like that? Nothing was more important than being part of this huge family called Journey. I told him l never sign contracts that are one-sided. Listening to what he was doing, and listening to what we were doingit was like A to Z. I was goin, How are we gonna morph this together and make it work?. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. I remember [pause]. And theres been some that I wasnt too pleased about, but my feet had been held to the fire, slightly, so I had to. I really, honestlyand you must print thisI really dont want to respond to what theyre doing, because what theyre doing is none of my business. RM: How much musical freedom does Zappa give his band? It was getting annoying. Thats right. Are you not allowed to talk about him on the record? In my mind, he cracked the stone when he went out and did our stuff without us. Theres like 20 different prosthetics, all claiming to be the one that lasts, and I had to do research on that crap. instrument. I thought, Okay. So I decided to try and teach myself. I really had to let it all go. I did a number of albums for other groups, where I did all the groundwork. The music is dear to me. But they didnt have any quote hit records, and werent on the radio much. RM: You did a lot of different styles of music during those three years. The Waka/Jawakaalbum was an interesting session, just because it was completely off the wall ad-lib. And these two girls were there with a friend. Every time I told somebody I was writing a story about the new lead singer of Journey, Id get the same incredulous response: Steve Perrys not the lead singer of Journey anymore? Even though the piece I was writing was mostly going to be about Arnel Pineda (whose pre-Journey work can be seen here) and the present-day incarnation of the band, I knew I couldnt write anything about Journey without getting in touch with Steve Perry. AD: When Craig writes a song, he will actually make a demo tape with a drum track on it, which is great because it gives me ideas. So at the end of a night, you feel great. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." After the tour, they got back in touch and asked me about being in the band, because Eric had unfortunately passed on. I like doing all of that. Ive read three reviews in my entire career, and they were all so painful that I decided not to read em anymore. If wed had a crystal ball back then, we woulda wrote twelve of those. Way after that.
